What Should I Be Paying For Hosting My Website?

Coming to an understanding of what you need in webhosting, so that you’re not over paying, but meeting your needs requires a learning curve.

I recommend to prospective clients that they write down what’s most important to them in a web host and contact a few different hosting companies and discuss their needs. If they lack the basic terminology I might offer the following.

If all your website is going to do at the beginning is to be a business card or information website about the business, maybe a few contact forms or information points. Maybe even a login area to access data or subscribe to a newsletter, then a basic hosting package under $20.00 a month, and as low as $9.00 a month may very well handle the clients website needs.

If they are going to be offering products for sale, a basic mass host account does not meet the needs of most of my clients. If you are looking to just test market a bit, and don’t mind the fact that most free shopping carts don’t adapt well to large volumes of traffic then a mass host may do the trick.
