It came to my attention earlier this year, when I was looking for new domains to register. I found one I liked, and went to register it. Unfortunately my credit card was declined. The next morning I was unable to register the domain because someone else, who obviously had inside information on what domains were being searched for, had registered it.

No, this was not a domain that someone could have lucked into, but an obscure name that I coined. I suspected this was a sneaky tactic by one registrar, only to find the practice becoming more and more prevalent.

Caution, only do searches for prospective domain names only when you are sure you can jump when you find the ones you want.
